Simple Pleasures
15 December 2000And how simple they are.
I am home for the break. (That’s until Jan. 16, I think.) And when I set up my computer here at home, I realize I have no modem… Until now, I have been connected through my network card to the campus network. No network. No modem. No problem.
At first, I thought I could take the modem out of my parents’ old computer and put it in mine. Simple enough. Then when I try to put it in, I realize it’s the wrong type.
Crap.
So… I did a little brainstorming. My notebook, which normally sits in my top dresser drawer and runs my webserver, DOES have a modem. But I have no desire to use that crappy little machine for a month when I have a beast at my disposal. So, I set up Internet connection sharing on my notebook. So, this is my current setup: The notebook connects to MSN, and my “beast” connects to the notebook using an Ethernet crossover cable. It’s really not a complicated fix, but I am enjoying the accomplishment. :-)
Thom’s World is down…
15 December 2000Yup, the main site is down for winter break. That’s because I run the machine from my notebook, and when I’m at home I don’t have a high-speed Ethernet connection like I do when I’m at the dorm.
So for now, all that is viewable is the LiveJournal. In the meantime, I hope to have some fun fooling around with the site design.
Lookin’ Good
13 December 2000My friend Jessica finnnnnally sent some pics. Pretty sharp! ;-) Now send me more… mwahahahaha…
Anyone have any isopropyl alcohol?
11 December 2000I just bought a classic NES gaming system… That’s the original Nintendo. Aside from the all-too-familiar Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cartridge, I also have the following games:
* Skate or Die
* Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
* Top Gun
* Uncanny X-Men
* Wrecking Crew
The only problem is, the system and the games are badly in need of cleaning. I need a toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol. I guess I’ll have to wait until I go home for the break. Oh well. Oh, and if anyone owns one of the original Zelda games for the NES, I’d be more than willing to buy it.
Red Mountain Revisited
10 December 2000Well this was certainly a week for my high school. Right now they’re playing Westwood for the state football championship. (Go Mountain Lions!) But, this week, I also went back and visited RMHS. Saw a bunch of my old teachers, and a bunch of old friends too. Erin and Kaleena are the highlights of the day. I kinda snuck up on Erin in the library before school started. She came up and gave me a big hug. The bell rang soon after, but I walked her to her class and we had a little time to catch up. Then I went to visit my Gov’t teacher, “HB,” and Kaleena was in her class. So I went back to the room after class and spoke with her for a while. I’m just glad to see old faces. Sorry I’d neglected to do so for so long.

3 December 2000Not much has been happening lately. Today I completed the design of a 4-bit microprocessor for my digital design class. It has no practical use; it can only perform math operations that almost everyone can do in their heads. But, it’s… a microprocessor… Oooooooooh……
