Another Brush with the Second Amendment

13 December 2004

(Taken from a discussion I’m having online…)

You ask what the use is [in owning a firearm], but you write off the second amendment as “outdated”. Ok, tell me… Put yourself in this situation. You’re an American. The worst is true about George W. Bush and the ultra-conservative right. They decide to stop at nothing to dictate their agenda. They put a stranglehold on free speech with the Patriot Act. They bring their torture tactics and “hold without trial” move stateside, using it against political opposition. They rig elections & jerrymander to perpetuate their domination over all three branches of the government. Let’s just throw in a military draft for good measure. When enough is enough, what are you left with to take back & defend your freedoms? Are you a gun owner, or not? Are you just going to flee to Canada?

In all likelihood, this is a purely hypothetical scenario.  And, sadly, dad’s lever-action .45 and the typical “personally owned firearms” are no match for the weaponry of the Army/Nat’l Guard, so any such defense would be a David-versus-Goliath situation.  But the point is made…  Forget household safety from burglars, forget hunting, etc…  The 2nd Amendment was written as a defense against tyranny.  Considering the concerns & general opinion as to how Bush is running the country, I don’t see why the liberal left consider “tyranny” such an impossibility.
